Boozman joins Ted Cruz effort to preserve same-sex marriage bans

Posted By on Tue, Feb 10, 2015 at 4:59 PM

Sen. John Boozman is among 11 senators who've joined with Ted Cruz to reintroduce legislation that requires the federal government to defer to the laws of the state where a couple resides to determine if someone is married for purposes of federal law.

Hard to see how the bill passes unless filibuster rules are revoked. Hard to see how the U.S. Supreme Court will relent on its view that legally married same-sex couples are entitled to federal benefits. It remains to be seen where the court will come down on state bans on marriage, but the indications so far favor marriage equality. Sen. Tom Cotton is not among those listed as initial sponsors.
