The Baxter Bulletin has dug up a story reminiscent of the long trudge of a Detroit man to and from his job.
Meet Sam Gardner, a military vet, who burns up about nine pairs of shoes a year walking eight miles from his rural home in Briarcliff to his job at Wendy’s in Mountain Home and then walking home. He’s been doing it for 12 years. He gets a lift now and then. No public transportation exists.
Gardner, who’s 54 takes it, well, in stride:
Gardner said he’s been walking since he was in the infantry.
“I’ve done it so long, it don’t seem like a problem no more,” Gardner said. “My brother told me once, ‘For someone who doesn’t have a car, you sure get around.’ ”
An on-line effort to raise money to fix Gardner’s car has been fruitful.
