Hughes schools consolidated with West Memphis

Posted By on Thu, Apr 9, 2015 at 2:30 PM

A new state law provided no relief for the Hughes School District, consolidated today with West Memphis by the state Board of Education. The vote was 7-1, with Alice Mahony voting no.

The district argued that a new state law allowed a waiver for districts with fewer than 350 students if they were not in fiscal or academic distress.  The state contended Hughes is in fiscal distress, a position the school district challenged.

Details on the debate from Gavin Lesnick of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette's on-line reporting staff.
