Monday's open line

Today's meager blog output was partly the result of a slow news day and partly the result of a short-staffed office. Very sorry, folks; we promise to do better.

We'll look for inspiration to Sojas Wagle, a Springdale student who finished as one of the top ten finalists in the preliminary round of the 2015 National Geography Bee in D.C. this morning. Competitors were drawn from all 50 states and several U.S. territories.

The ten finalists will compete in the final round on Wednesday, moderated by Soledad O'Brien; the show will air this Friday on AETN.

A secret: Back in my glory days, I made it to the National Geography Bee myself. Seventh grade. Unlike Sojas, I did not make it into the final round of competition. I don't remember the exact wording of the question that knocked me out of the running, but I think it involved defining "arroyo" — which may be a useful word to know in Arkansas this week, considering the weather.
