Deadline Hollywood reports that HBO will team with Morgan Freeman to produce a dramatic series based on the life of Bass Reeves, one of the first black U.S. marshals and a legendary figure in the Oklahoma territory. Also part of the project are Lori McCreary’s Revelations Entertainment and Grey’s Anatomy co-star James Pickens, Jr.
A statue of the lawman stands in Fort Smith, where Reeves served under federal Judge Isaac Parker. He’s featured prominently at the Fort Smith National Historic site and his exploits will be a part of the national marshals museum under development there. A former slave, Reeves was illiterate, but memorized information on warrants in the course of arrests in Arkansas and Oklahoma.
