UCA basketball flunks academic progress measure

Posted By on Wed, May 27, 2015 at 3:34 PM

The NCAA has announced that four schools, including the University of Central Arkansas, will be banned from post-season men's basketball play in 2015-16 because of low academic progress scores. UCA also faces practice time restrictions.

The progresss rate is a little complicated to explain, but it appears the required minimum of 930 is equivalent to about a 50 percent graduation rate.

Here's the NCAA release.

By the way: The University of Arkansas's men's basketball score was 959, high enough to qualify coach Mike Anderson for a $50,000 bonus, according to a Tweet from Bart Pohlman.

UCA's athletic director, Brad Teague, provided documents UCA had submitted to argue for mitigation of penalties. They cited unusual circumstances and some significant efforts to improve academics on the basketball team.
