Huckabee and the Holocaust: It's all about the elites vs. the good Americans

Ed Kilgore, writing for Talking Points Memo, notes that Mike Huckabee has often gone to the Holocaust well and continued to do so before in the face of criticism. It's all about the war on Christians, at least those of Huckabee's persuasion.

In summary:

Contemporary American life is full of signs of the coming anti-Christian totalitarian regime that hates God’s Chosen People, whether it’s the Israeli Jews preparing the way for the battle of Armageddon or embattled Christians. After all, they’re already slaughtering babies by the millions.

Mike Huckabee, whose latest book, God, Guns, Grits and Gravy is a long, paranoid tirade about the oppression of Heartland Americans by coastal elites, will leap to the genocidal tendencies of Secular Socialists like Barack Obama—the perfect symbol of the co-mingling of all of Satan’s imps thanks to his Muslim name and “heritage”—at the drop of a hat. If it helps him corner the Christian Right vote against challengers like the “evangelical Catholic” culture warriors Bobby Jindal, then all the better.

UPDATE: With everyone, including Israelis on the conservative side of the fence, blasting Huckabee, he yesterday issued as close to a walkback as the Huckster will ever do. He STILL defends the use of Holocausts, but allows as how maybe he could have chosen a better metaphor this once.

The former Arkansas governor told Breitbart News on Sunday that Obama is marching Israel "to the door of the oven" by agreeing to ease sanctions on Iran in exchange for new restraints for its nuclear program.

Huckabee said he initially didn't regret making the comparison, but admits there might have been a better metaphor to make.

"At the time, I didn't. But looking back, I think that maybe the metaphor is not a good one," Huckabee said. "It should be strictly used. But in this case, it's absolutely appropriate because the Iranians are threatening the murder of millions of Jews."

Huck's bottom line remains: "appropriate." An apology that isn't.

ALSO: A Baylor history professor and authority on Baptists who says he once liked Huckabee says Huckabee is no longer the flavor of the day among Baptists and evangelicals. One reason: Going the cheap and easy Fox News route.
