Needed: A good toddler with a gun?

Thanks to the Wonkblog for the report that people are being shot by U.S. toddlers on a nearly weekly basis this year.

After spending a few hours sifting through news reports, I've found at least 43 instances this year of somebody being shot by a toddler 3 or younger. In 31 of those 43 cases, a toddler found a gun and shot himself or herself.

Would liability laws for gun owners — such as states that have penalties for people who leave kids in hot cars — encourage more safety with weapons? Would universal background checks discourage some stupid people from owning more weapons? Might a restoration of government money to researchgun safety produce solid statistics about guns and injury that could get people thinking about sensible safety ideas?

The NRA answer and the answer of it's tool, the Republican Party? Shut up. The nearly unified willingness to take on the NRA was one high mark of the Democratic debate Tuesday night.

PS — Note here the arbitrary 3-year-old cutoff. Many more children are involved in such incidents every day. A blogger I follow, Pitt Griffin, reports them with sad regularity, as does Talking Points Memo.

  • Trump immigration protest at LR: Quick and fierce

It was not even 24 hours ago that Sophia Said, director of the Interfaith Center; City Director Kathy Webb and others decided to organize a protest today of Donald Trump's executive order that has left people from Muslim countries languishing in airports or unable to come to the US at all — people with visas, green cards,a  post-doc graduate student en route to Harvard, Google employees abroad, families. I got the message today before noon; others didn't find out until it was going on. But however folks found out, they turned out in huge numbers, more than thousand men, women and children, on the grounds of the state Capitol to listen to speakers from all faiths and many countries.
