Little Rock officer cleared in pursuit that resulted in death

Posted By on Sat, Nov 7, 2015 at 6:47 AM

The Little Rock police yesterday released patrol car video of Officer Zach Hardman's chase of a stolen vehicle that struck two pedestrians, killing one. The release said the officer had been cleared of any wrongdoing in the event.

Jordan Vandenberghe has been charged with murder in the case. Trendia Norton was killed in the crash of the vehicle he was driving. Her daughter Nahtali was seriously injured.

The news release notes that Hardman was not near the vehicle being pursued at the time of the accident "and in no way was the cause."

The release said Hardman was cleared of any wrongdoing. Departmental rules on police chases call for them to be terminated when the suspect is known and being sought for a non-violent felony. Hartman initiated a chase over a non-violent felony (the stolen car), but he did not know the suspect.

Rules were followed. But might some consideration be due about a policy that allows high-speed chases of stolen cars?
