Slowly adding to the ledger of Medicaid expansion states

Good story from Stateline earlier this week on the national picture in Medicaid expansion. Louisiana is the latest state to expand, becoming the third Southern state to move forward, along with Arkansas and Kentucky. That makes 31 states plus the District of Columbia that have expanded Medicaid. In the 19 refusnik states, an estimated 3 million people are without coverage options because of the red-state holdouts' refusal to accept billions in federal dollars to expand the program.

Hutchinson, Rapert critical of Board of Health's decision to remove "death of the unborn child" language

The state Board of Health voted yesterday 12-6 to nix the phrase "death of the unborn child" from abortion regulations passed by the legislature in 2015, as well as the remnants of the 2013 law that was largely struck down by an appellate court. The regulations would instead keep the current definition of abortion: "termination of the pregnancy.

Teachers' union wary of governor's Teach for America investment, alludes to proposed National Board Certification rule change

The Arkansas Education Association said it wasn't opposed to the investment, but added "we do have concerns." The AEA specifically mentioned National Board Certification, an advanced professional distinction that earns teachers an additional $5,000 stipend from the state every year. But now, the Education Department wants to scale back those bonuses.

Former Arvest Bank official sentenced to eight years in federal prison for bank fraud

Arkansas Business reports that H. Dennis Smiley Jr. was sentenced today to 97 months in federal prison. Smiley, the former president of Arvest Bank's Benton County market, pleaded guilty to bank fraud last August. Smiley was also ordered to pay restitution of $4.9 million and two years of supervised release will follow his prison sentence.
