Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders at New Hampshire town hall; will face off in one on one debate tonight

Posted By on Thu, Feb 4, 2016 at 8:06 AM

I was out last night and didn't see the New Hampshire town hall event hosted by CNN. The pundit narrative is that it was Hillary Clinton's best performance to date, but that she flubbed her answer regarding Goldman Sachs speaking fees. What did y'all think?

Consider me skeptical that anything changed last night — Sanders is the strong favorite to win New Hampshire; Clinton is the overwhelming favorite to win the nomination. It's a fun contest to watch. That's partly because of the ideological stakes, with Sanders trying to move the Overton window for left-wing policy in the Democratic Party, facing off against Hillary Clinton, whose husband nearly slammed that window shut in the 1990s. And it's also fun to watch because these are two underrated and highly skilled politicians. They are quite stylistically different from each other, and no one is ever going to call either a "natural." But they're both good at this.

And both are very effective, in their own idiosyncratic ways, on a debate stage. They'll face off in their first one-on-one debate tonight at the University of New Hampshire, hosted and broadcast by MSNBC.

For those following the intra-party squabble closely, it's worth keeping in mind that most rank-and-file Democrats like Clinton and Sanders. Approximately half the country will vote for whoever the Democratic nominee is, and then the fight will be over the sliver of other voters that can put the Ds back in the White House.
