  • PERMIT APPROVED: For 1836 Club in historic Packet House.
The Arkansas News Bureau has a full rundown on yesterday's meeting of the state Alcoholic Beverage Control board, whose actions included denial of a private club permit for a karaoke club outside Pine Bluff.

Legislators, the sheriff and others opposed Robert Perkins' request for a permit to sell alcohol at a private club at Uncle Bob's Karaoke, where people now bring their own alcohol. Opponents said the location in a rural area on a two-lane road was a bad place for a private club.

Also:

* A private club permit was approved for the 1836 Club, the private club in the historic Packet House on Cantrell Road that Sen. Jeremy Hutchinson and other organizers envision as a gathering spot for business and political these. Individual memberships will cost $250 a month. How the club will operate in context of nominal limits on gifts to elected public officials — would bringing a politician as a guest not amount to a gift of something of value? — remains an open question at this point. Work toward the opening is underway, Decorator Kaki Hockersmith is overseeing interior spruces.

* The board approved an extension of alcohol service hours at the Riverdale 10 theater on Cantrell Road from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. to 11 a.m. to midnight. But the board refused a request to lift a two-drink limit. Police feared other theaters would seek similar leeway.

* The board denied a beer permit for the Downtown Deli and Grocery on East Sixth in Little Rock. Police and neighbors said it could create problems.
