The New York Times has published on-line a series of op-eds, in graphic form, on life on Death Row around the U.S.

One installment of the series by Patrick Chappatte is about an Arkansas inmate,  Kenneth Reams,"How to get on Death Row without firing a bullet."

The image above is a scene setter for the story, from downtown Pine Bluff. Reams was one of two men who robbed a driver at an ATM. Reams didn't have a gun. His accomplice killed the driver. He took a plea bargain and got a sentence of life without parole. Reams didn't take the deal. He got a death sentence 22 years ago, at age 18.

He's made something of his life in prison — found a fiance in France, started a nonprofit to educate about life in prison, had art exhibitions. His mother, who was 15 when Reams was born, is rarely able to see him.
