City Year joins chamber to focus on Hall High School

City Year, the Americorps program that has put volunteers in Little Rock schools since 2004, will join city business leaders today in a partnership to be based at Hall High School in the 2016-17 school year.

The partnership is a three-year program with the Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce and Fifty for the future. Retired Gen. Wesley Clark, a Hall High alumnus, will join Shep Russell, the president of 50 for the Future, and others at the announcement.

City Year targets schools like Hall with large enrollments of high-poverty students to help them graduate and get ready for college. It has 54 volunteers in Little Rock currently working with students in grades 3-9.

UPDATE: At the announcement, chamber officials said they'd put $50,000 a year into the effort.

Eight AmeriCorps members will work at Hall High with ninth graders on attendance, behavior and course work.
