City Year joins chamber to focus on Hall High School

Posted By on Wed, May 25, 2016 at 7:16 AM

City Year, the Americorps program that has put volunteers in Little Rock schools since 2004, will join city business leaders today in a partnership to be based at Hall High School in the 2016-17 school year.

The partnership is a three-year program with the Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce and Fifty for the future. Retired Gen. Wesley Clark, a Hall High alumnus, will join Shep Russell, the president of 50 for the Future, and others at the announcement.

City Year targets schools like Hall with large enrollments of high-poverty students to help them graduate and get ready for college. It has 54 volunteers in Little Rock currently working with students in grades 3-9.

UPDATE: At the announcement, chamber officials said they'd put $50,000 a year into the effort.

Eight AmeriCorps members will work at Hall High with ninth graders on attendance, behavior and course work.
