The Little Rock Port Authority has been approved for a $6.185 million federal transportation grant to improve its slackwater harbor.

A port news release said the money will pay for, among others, a new dock with a rail hookup capability, and new rail storage.

The blackwater harbor is an inland channel from the river that provides a safe harbor from currents. It's 4,500 feet long, 15 feet deep and 320 feet wide. It currently has a 190-foot dock and one berth, room enough for two barges, two deep, on both sides.

Various officials will celebrate the award of the money at an event Monday.
