Fight in progress on election oversight

Posted By on Thu, Feb 23, 2017 at 7:40 AM

Bubbling at the Capitol this week is a legislative effort — a chief instigator is Sen. Bryan King — to end the autonomy of the state Election Commission and put it in the office of Secretary of State Mark Martin. The legislation would create an investigative staff in the secretary of state's office.

Putting the independent commission and an investigative staff under the control of a single partisan elected official is not a sound idea.

Commissioner Stu Soffer of Pine Bluff White Hall confirms that members of the commission, which includes appointees of the governor and the minority political party, have adopted a resolution  opposing the legislation.
