Says here that
Walmart is wacking jobs in its Information Systems Division in Bentonville, with some jobs  being eliminated, some being reduced to part-time and some going to an outside contractor in India. Cuts are in the works for Sam's Club, too.

UPDATE: Walmart spokesman Randy Hargrove got in touch Wednesday afternoon to say the original Talk Business post linked here was incorrect in saying jobs had been outsourced to India and that some jobs had been converted to part-time. He said the company was pushing for a "higher ratio" of full-time workers in engineering. He said the company is not releasing numbers, but the company would have to sometimes reduce jobs to achieve efficiency and remain "lean and fast."

Meanwhile, in case you missed it, Walmart is hiring "hundreds" of  people in the San Francisco Bay area to ramp up competition with Amazon.

San Francisco? Land of the "fruits and nuts," as our right-wingers so often call them?

Do they not get Arkansas newspapers in Bentonville? Do they not know we are 1) on the cutting edge of computer coding; 2) pay some of the lowest wages in the country; 3) have slashed workers comp and unemployment benefits; 4) have a right-to-work law; 5) want to make it impossible for injured people to file damage lawsuits; 6) will give away nearly unlimited corporate welfare payments to private companies; 7) years ago eliminated the estate tax, worth billions to Walton family members; 8) just changed inheritance law to benefit the ultrarich; 9) legally discriminate against gay people, 10) want to eliminate tens of thousands of the working poor from federally subsidized medical coverage? C'mon Walmart, you know this. What's not to like?

Gov. Asa Hutchinson this week said there's never been a pro-job, pro-growth atmosphere in Arkansas like he's created.

Oh, OK, Walmart IS building a big new warehouse in Bentonville to distribute stuff to Walmart stores.

Also: Note that we have a blue ribbon commission mulling the future.

  • Cats and dogs

I've always been leery of people who dislike animals. To my wife and me, a house without dog hair in the corners and a cat perched on the windowsill is as barren as a highway rest stop. We're down to three dogs and two cats, the smallest menagerie we've had for years.
