  • ARKANSAS? Leslie Rutledge is more interested in an anti-aboriton operation in Maryland than Arkansas payday lenders.
Attorney General Leslie Rutledge doesn't have time to go after payday lenders in Arkansas and her office dropped the ball in its first attempt on blocking an effort to stop some executions earlier this week.

But she DOES have time to help anti-abortion forces mislead pregnant women away from abortion providers. A news release today from her office says she's intervened in a federal case in Maryland along with other state Republican legal officers to challenge a Baltimore ordinance that requires centers established to talk women out of abortion to state that, as in the case of the Greater Baltimore Center for Pregnancy Concerns, they do NOT provide abortions or abortion referrals.

Rutledge says this is a 1st Amendment issue. She says abortion clinics don't have to say what they DON'T provide.

Why this is important to the people who elected her in Arkansas is a mystery. But it is merely one of numerous lawsuits she's joined around the country to protect polluters, discriminate against gay people and limit women's medical rights.

Rutledge operates a consumer protection unit. In theory, it goes after people who make misleading claims about services. That doesn't include usurious payday lenders. And it apparently wouldn't include any misrepresentation by  anti-ab0rtion counselors who press women not to end pregnancies while appearing to offer a full range of pregnancy services. This counseling must be protected, said Rutledge, to "create a supportive environment for women." Supportive at least as long as they agree with Rutledge that women should be discouraged by any means a legal medical procedure. Supportive of a safe, legal abortion? Not so much.
