A U.S. District Court Judge in San Francisco has issued a preliminary injunction that blocks major parts of a presidential executive order that would cut federal grants to “sanctuary cities” that refuse to assist federal immigration officials in apprehending undocumented immigrants.
Citing comments by Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Judge William Orrick of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California wrote, in part: “If there was doubt about the scope of the Order, the President and Attorney General have erased it with their public comments. The Constitution vests the spending power in Congress, not the President, so the Order cannot constitutionally place new conditions on federal funds.”
Santa Clara County and San Francisco had asked Orrick for the injunction. Read more about the ruling here.
