Tony Alamo,
the former Arkansas evangelist serving a federal prison sentence for sexually  abusing girls, has died at 82.

A full length AP obit here.

The Encyclopedia of Arkansas also has a rich entry on Alamo. After his conversion to Christianity, Alamo (born Bernie Lazar Hoffman) established a headquarters in Crawford County. His cult-like ministry was controversial from the start, with a history dogged by lawsuits and controversies over tax evasion and theft of the body of his late wife, Susan, along with mistreatment of followers in various business schemes. He wanted the body of his wife because he claimed she would be resurrected.

This wasn't his first stint in prison.

Alamo turned up regularly for negative reasons in the Arkansas Times. Here's one visit to his compound in 2007, by John Williams.

He was a creep, probably best remembered by many for the anti-Catholic flyers his group distributed regularly around Little Rock and elsewhere.
