Dr. Velmer S. Burton Jr., who's been dean of the University of Mississippi School of Applied Sciences, has been named executive vice chancellor and provost of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He starts work July 1.

Zulma Torro left the position last fall for the presidency of another school and Dr. Deborah Baldwin has been serving as interim provost, the No. 2 job on campus under Chancellor Andrew Rogerson.

Burton's resume includes an administrative post at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and stints as a department head, graduate dean and small college chancellor.

Rogerson said his experience in student retention and graduation initiatives is a fit for UA Little Rock's goals.

Burton,  who holds a Ph.D. in sociology,  also will serve on the faculty as a professor of criminal justice. He's written on crime, community corrections and consequences of legal restrictions placed on former offenders.
