Funeral for Melvin Pickens, 84, who died Sunday, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 28 at New Hope Baptist Church, 1851 Howard Street. Pickens was known as The Broom Man. Visually impaired, he walked the neighborhoods of the city for six decades selling brooms and befriending thousands.

Word of his funeral comes from his friend Everett Hatcher of Little Rock Broomworks, who got the time from Pickens' son John.

Great piece in Washington Post on the budget crisis in Louisiana. Big tax cuts and corporate welfare will do that to a state, particularly to a state whose previous governor, Republican Bobby Jindal, refused to join the Obamacare-funded Medicaid expansion. There's a lesson there for Arkansas.
