  • Newell: founded support group for incarcerated parents and their children in 1994

An Arkansan who started a group that has helped support tens of thousands of children whose parents are behind bars is got some love from the Huffington Post this morning.

Dee Ann Newell founded and serves as the executive director of the group Arkansas Voices for the Children Left Behind in 1994. Newell tells HuffPo that in the past 23 years, the group has offered support, mentoring and opportunities to over 38,000 kids. The group partners with mentors and schools to help keep children whose parents are in prison from falling behind their peers, assists in keeping the lines of communication open between kids and their incarcerated parents, offers parenting classes to prisoners, and helps released inmates re-join their families.

You can read the Huff Post story here.

We've written about Newell and her work with incarcerated parents and their children several times over the years, most recently in June 2016.
