In Arkansas, the powers-that-be will insist to the bitter end that the only thing better than a freeway cutting through the heart of a city is a wider freeway cutting through the heart of a city.

But check this jJust in from Wisconsin:

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is asking the federal government to rescind its decision to expand a section of Interstate-94 in Milwaukee,
An immediate problem is lack of legislative authorization for spending on the project. The lawsuit over the project is a complicating factor (as, it is hoped, an expected lawsuit will be when the Arkansas Department of Transportation has completed its environmental assessment and then forges ahead as expected with the widening of the I-30 concrete ditch through Little Rock in the so-called 30 Crossing project.)

In Wisconsin, the lawsuit challenged a 3.5-mile widening project (the Arkansas project is about 6 miles.)

Said the Wisconsin Gazette:

The plaintiffs in NAACP Milwaukee Chapter v Ross allege the highway construction project would have “adverse environmental effects on air quality and water resources,” as well as “the likely effect of exacerbating regional racial segregation."
Sound familiar?
