Governor's Asian travel tab put at $70,000

Gov. Asa Hutchinson's trade mission to Asia this week will cost approximately $70,079, said Jeff Moore of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission.

The private nonprofit Arkansas Economic Development Foundation will cover "additional costs as needed," Moore said. The foundation is often used for, among others, covering the cost of alcohol, which may not be purchased with state money.

The entourage:

Governor Hutchinson (plus one member of the Governor's security team)
Mike Preston, Executive Director, AEDC
Alison Williams, Chief of Staff for Office of Governor Hutchinson
Yee Wong Yam, Special Advisor on Trade with Asia
Mark Hamer, Director, International Business Development, AEDC
Ben Walters, International Project Manager, AEDC
Lindsay Liu (in China), Director, AEDC Office in China
Neal Jansen (in Japan), Director, AEDC Office in Japan

This is the governor's third Asian journey to develop business. The governor has touted plant announcements in Jonesboro, Forrest City, Arkadelphia, Little Rock and Fort Smith as products of the work. Several of the major announcements have not yet taken shape — such as a huge pulp mill near Arkadelphia and some textile-based operations elsewhere, but a spokesman said last week that the projects were on timetables.
