MATTHEW RIEHL

The man suspected of shooting five deputies, one fatally, in a Denver suburb before being killed himself has been identified as Matthew Riehl, 37.

He’s described by the Denver Post as a former lawyer, an honorably discharged military reservist who served in Iraq and a law enforcement critic in social media posts. He had no criminal record though he’d had encounters with police. He’d made remarks about running for sheriff as a Libertarian.

Accounts of the shooting talk of the volume of gunshots fired in the battle between the shooter and officers but don’t yet reveal what sort of weapon was being used. He reportedly opened fire on a group of deputies with a rifle when they approached his barricaded apartment. Some accounts say he fired as many as 100 rounds.
