Various news outlets are reporting that House Speaker Paul Ryan will not seek re-election and will retire from Congress.

Ryan, an Ayn Rand fanatic who once stated wistfully that he has been dreaming of cutting health care spending for the poor since he was drinking kegs in college, devoted his career to seeking tax cuts for the rich and imposing spending cuts that harmed poor people. It sounds ugly when you put it like that so he pretended it was about deficits. Until a Republican came into the White House, that is. A charlatan who preyed on the media's thirst for a wonky and principled conservative politician, Ryan will now no doubt benefit from the tax cuts he helped enact, as I'm sure a lucrative career in the awaits him in the grift mill of right-wing politics. All dogs go to Heaven and all politicians retire to piles of cash.

It was not even 24 hours ago that Sophia Said, director of the Interfaith Center; City Director Kathy Webb and others decided to organize a protest today of Donald Trump's executive order that has left people from Muslim countries languishing in airports or unable to come to the US at all — people with visas, green cards,a  post-doc graduate student en route to Harvard, Google employees abroad, families. I got the message today before noon; others didn't find out until it was going on. But however folks found out, they turned out in huge numbers, more than thousand men, women and children, on the grounds of the state Capitol to listen to speakers from all faiths and many countries.
