At the moment, Republican primary voters are demonstrating good judgment by favoring Land Commissioner John Thurston in a race for the open secretary of state seat against unhinged legislator Trevor Drown, a vindictive homophobe endorsed by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette for inexplicable reasons. Thurston has been a steady performer in state office. In a way, Drown would be a better nominee for Democrat Susan Inman, a kind, competent and experienced election expert. But that presumes such distinctions matter in reflexively Republican Arkansas these days.
