John Howell, 58, who was serving a life sentence for capital murder in Garland County, died shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday after being found unresponsive on the floor of his barracks at the Cummins Unit, a spokesman said.

The Correction Department said the State Police will investigate the death and an autopsy will be conducted.

Is there any indication of foul play. Said Solomon Graves, the Department spokesman:

At this point the Department cannot say that this death is believed to be due to a natural cause. The death is under investigation by ASP. The CrimeLab will examine the body in order to determine the specific cause and manner of death. ASP and the Crime Lab are notified following all inmate deaths, regardless of the suspected cause or manner of death
