Parents of eStem Junior High students were informed a gun was found in a student's possession today. Police were called and no harm was done.

Jarrod DuPriest, director of the downtown junior high at 410 Shall, at 123 W. Third wrote parents:
We want to make you aware of an incident that occurred at eStem Downtown Jr. High today. A student informed a teacher that they believed another student had a gun in their possession. The teacher immediately reported this information to administration, and the student was removed from class. The student did, in fact, have an unloaded small handgun in their possession. We called the Little Rock Police Department, and they are currently handling this situation pursuant to legal requirements.

This is an unusual occurrence at eStem as we have not encountered this in the eleven years we have been open. Thankfully, we have the necessary systems in place to address these types of incidents, and they have proven to be successful today. The safety of our students is our top priority. Moving forward, we will continue to use proper protocols to keep our students safe. As always, please encourage your child to immediately report any suspicious or potentially unsafe behaviors and activities to an adult.

By working together, we can ensure the safety and security of our students.
The police reports says that a 15-year-old student turned the gun over to DuPriest when called to the office. He took it from his pants. The type of weapon wasn't identified. The report said officers "cleared" it on arriving at the school. The boy's mother was called to police offices when he was interviewed. He told officers it was not his weapon and that he was holding it for someone else. He was charged as a juvenile as being in possession of a gun on school property.

A followup to Rebekah Hall's earlier report on Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr.'s announcement that cuts will be necessary in the city budget in part to pay for "priorities," such as his desire to expand the police force, but also to deal with the reality often mentioned here of stagnant to decling city sales tax revenue. Some quick ideas on that:
