Raven Cook, founder of Foundations: Black History Educational Programming, has a new weekly segment on KUAF called “Reflections in Black” that focuses on the legacy of black Americans.

Cook, an educator at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and Leigh Wood, the producer of “Reflections in Black,” plan for a new profile to air during “Ozarks at Large” at noon and 7 p.m. each Wednesday. First up, is Carter G. Woodson. Future segments will cover Stokely Carmichael, Gwendolyn Brooks and Little Rock’s Charlotte A. Stephens. Periodically, Cook will offer longer commentary on her work as an educator and more information on the figures profiled in the series.

Cook and Wood met when Cook appeared last year on the KUAF Vinyl Hour to discuss her project “Music and the Movement.” According to Wood, the plan to have a regular segment came together in December. Wood acknowledges that “NPR can be notoriously homogeneous in its whiteness” and wants diverse voices and perspectives that reflect the community.

Don’t worry if you live outside of Northwest Arkansas. The segments can be heard online after they air.
