Galactic fan checks in on last night's show

Posted on Wed, Apr 19, 2006 at 12:06 PM

The Juanita's crowd danced hard and dripped sweat on the (pleasantly) not-too crowded dance floor last night as one of the best live funk and jam acts this or the other side of the river, New Orleans' Galactic, got us all moving right from the very first set. You can’t say “funky” enough. Funky, funky, funky. We looked around and the psychedelic-instrumental, straight-from-N’awlins sound was enjoyed by the mixed race/age/gender crowd. The band, led by Ben Ellman, rocked with flavors streaming from his saxophone, along with Rich Vogel on Hammond B3 organ and keyboards, Jeff Raines on guitar, the skillful bass of Robert Mercurio and drummer Stanton Moore. They worked perfectly together, in time and space, to prove that jamming can be both a spiritual and ass-moving experience.   —Ashley Smith
