Ian Cohen wins Rep's Comedy Playwrighting Award

Posted on Wed, May 24, 2006 at 12:14 PM

The third Kaufman and Hart Prize for New American Comedy has gone to Ian Cohen for his work, "Bertrand Priest." The $10,000 award is presented biennially by the Arkansas Repertory Theatre. Cohen is the artistic associate at Lark Play Development Center in New York City. "Bertrand Priest" is a dark comedy involving a young writer and his muse. Along with the $10,000 prize, Cohen's play will get a stage reading at the Rep and professional production on the theater's main stage in spring 2007.
Other finalists were Nicholas Korn, author of "The Antic in Romantic," a modern-day commedia; and Kenneth N. Kurtz, writer of the farce comedy "Merde De Canard: A Comedy of Seven Doors and Eight Automatons." Korn and Kurtz, as finalists, will receive $1,000 and stage readings of their scripts. The stage readings are July 28-30 on the Rep's SecondStage, with the playwrights in attendance. Call 378-0405 for ticket information.
Honorable mention went to Richard Gleaves, the writer of "Oswald on Ice," a black comedy involving Lee Harvey Oswald's undertaker. (That last one, we've gotta see. Here's hoping someone near here will stage it.)
