The Mind of Matt: Movies and Metal

Posted on Sun, Jul 16, 2006 at 8:32 PM

Matt Smith, local movie theater entrepreneur (Market Street Cinema, the region's only true art house) and rock music lover, blogs this column periodically on Little Rocking. Matt hit the Sammy Hagar show in Memphis last week:

MOVIES & METAL

Wed, 7/19/06 7/12/06

SAMMY HAGAR threw down in Memphis, Tenn. It was an awesome show. He did  an opening set of just his favorite songs of his solo career. The stage was designed to resemble his CABO WABO CANTINA. Palm trees, sand, a bar, bar tender and waitress. During the show drinks were brought out to Sammy and the band by girls in small "swim suits." Hagar ripped thru "Mas Tequila," "Rock Candy," "Three Lock Box," "Can't Drive 55," "Rainy Day Woman," "Sam I Am" - not in that order! and others!

The stage area for guests circled around behind the drums. I was able to stay on stage with a great view for the whole show. Shots of CABO WABO Tequila and WABOrita drinks were provided thru out the show! It rocked! Being back stage before and after the show, as well as on stage during the show is a kick-ass concert experience!

Mark Michael Anthony from Van Halen came out after the break. He played a long solo, then Sammy joined him on stage. The deep friendship is obvious.
They played "Runnin With The Devil," "Top Of The World," "Why Can't This Be Love," "Good Enough, Summer Nights," "Finish Whatcha Started," "Best Of Both Worlds" ...... talked to the crowd during the show, signed hats, shirts, banners and tossed them back to the fans. They Finished with Beastie Boys' "Fight For Your Rigth To Party."

Sammy is great to be around. He is extremely friendly for a rock star! Before and after the concert he was back stage talking and signing. He gave me set lists, drum sticks, hats, shirts, picks, and would sign anything you asked.  Just really nice about the hook up on helping me add to my ROCK STAR collection!

It was not as good as going on his cruise and nothing is as much fun as his shows in
Cabo San Lucas, but one of my better nights ever in Memphis. In fact, better than fight night!

The crowd was lite at Mud Island, maybe 1,500 people. All rock acts have had low attendance in this area lately. Kiss, Van Halen, Motley Crue ... small crowds in both Little Rock and Memphis.

Anyway, I will be going to Wisconsin this weekend  and all  next week to hang out with Sammy Hagar some more! I will catch other bands as well.

Thursday night everyone was out at Market Street Cinema. My favorite TV person Renee Shapiro ( sorry Justin  Acri) -- was there. She is always super! Warwick Sabin from the Arkansas Times came out to see "Word Play." It seems that he beat up Jim Harris and took his passes! Sorry, but Jim missed the screening! (EDITOR'S NOTE: I had already seen the screener, but I did attend a private party for the director and Vic Fleming at the Peabody earlier in the evening).

The films director made it to Little Rock for the screening.  Peter was cool. He talked to the crowd, took photos, discussed his movie, answered questions...... sweet!

Mr. Vic Fleming had a crossword for all tickets holders -- and we have extra copies for anyone checking out the film this week. Mr. Fleming spoke before and after the film. Mr. Fleming, from Little Rock, is featured in the film with songs, and
puzzle work. A good time was had by all! Come check out WORDPLAY!

Remember Monday, July 17, at 7:30 p.m. - "HEART OF THE GAME"  from Miramax films. Tickets are FREE! www.heartofthegame-film.com for info, or hit www.marketstreetcinema.net

It is still Jim's world! -- Matt
