Movies, metal and more musings from Matt Smith while he's out in Rocky Mountain High country:

The Grand Prix of Denver ran Friday through Sunday, Aug. 11-13. The event took place in and around the Pepsi Center. Pepsi Center is the home of the NBA Nuggets and the NHL Avalanche. This pro level event facility is new and immaculate. I attended the race with my buddies from Pettit Racing. My friend Cameron Worth is the owner of Pettit and a winning driver. He has been a champion in drag racing and street racing events as well as a world champ at the GT 2 level. Cam didn’t race this weekend. Still, it was nice to see him and get in the pit area with other drivers and their cars. You should check out Pettit @ www.pettitracing.com.  They are based in Florida. They race and ship parts all over the world. They have what it takes to make your car roll! From the little Hot Import Nights cars that need an air filter, to the hard-core racer.

The GP had the usual race tents set up near the track. Venders with gear, T-shirts, food, drinks, models, paintball and beach volleyball.  There were live bands at night some local, and a few national acts: G. Love & Special Sauce, P-Nuckle and The Samples, played. I think the best sponsor was Red Bull.  They had a tremendous setup with stunt bikes and incredible riders.

All of the cars were set up in paddock areas before the race. You had plenty of time to check them out. In addition to the racers, plenty of exotics were to be found: Lambo, Ferrari, Lotus, M-12, Porsche, Ford GT 40, and of course track ready Vipers and Vettes.

Race classes included Champ Car Atlantic, Speed World Challenge, Formula
BMW USA, Colorado Vintage Race Group.   You can find more info @
www.gpdenver.com, www.champcar.ws,  and www.scca.com.  Nascar is fine  I guess.  I have been to several events and tracks, but I prefer road racing.

DOWNTOWN DENVER

The 16th Street Mall is a huge multiple block area. It contains movie cinemas, shops like Nike Town, places to grab a bite like ESPN Zone and Hard Rock Café. A free trolley and bus run thru the area.  It is very close to Pepsi Center, Coors Field, and the Home of the Broncos.  I am sure the River Market in Little Rock wants to grow up and be just like 16th street !
