Soul food

I had the good fortune to attend a pot luck today for John Walker, the civil rights lawyer and gadfly, who turns 70 June 3.

What a feed. About 10 cooks -- seasoned cooks -- contributed to the groaning board.

I've probably forgotten some of it (and my pictures don't do it justice), but the food included stewed pigs' feet; pork neckbones; stewed turkey necks; brisket; spare ribs; fried chicken; fried catfish; incredible greens, with a ratio of greens to salt meat of approximately 1 to 1; fresh black-eyed peas; candied yams; as good a dish of macaroni cheese as you'd ever want to eat; cornbread muffins; perfectly cooked giant okra, not a bit slimy; rice; cantaloupe and strawberries; peach cobbler, and something shown below, volcano cake. It's a gooey mix of chocolate, cake and coconut, sort of like a molten Peter Paul Mounds bar.

UPDATE: I think I had my natural disasters mixed up. I think maybe this is an earthquake cake. Like chocolate, pecans, coconut and cream cheese? You know you do. Recipe right here.

If somebody opened a place selling food like this every day, you'd find me there a lot.
