Tastes Like Chicken?

Posted By on Mon, Jul 9, 2007 at 3:55 PM

Gator bites from Cajun Broilers in Hot Springs.  Boneless chunks of gator spiced, breaded, and deep fried in vegetable oil, these "bites" arrive at your table tender and juicy.  An appetizer plate runs about 5-6 bucks.   I think it tastes like alligator, but our cohorts (who had never had gator) believed it to taste like taste like very chewy chicken.  Blasphemy I tells ya.

Our friends ordered the crab fingers appetizer, also in the $5-$6 range.

Both were excellent.  I opted for the bottle of Cajun Garlic Sauce on the table instead of using the cocktail sauce that came with the orders.  If you haven't been here, you don't know what you're missing, but get there early- the line can get very, very long.

On Lake Hamilton, 2806 Albert Pike Hot Springs (501) 767-5695.  Get there before 6 and you can take advantage of the Early Bird Specials.  A topic for a later post.

Who else likes the Gator?  You can apply to hunt one, ya know.

On my way back to my hometown for the holiday, I stopped off in Memphis for lunch.Neely's BBQ, opened by the nephews of the famous Jim Neely, the owner of Interstate BBQ.I gots the pulled pork platter.  With Fries and Beans.  Sorry, I should have gotten the slaw or potato salad, but I was craving some fries.  And boy were they good.  The sauce was good, but the pork itself was the real standout- tender and smoky.  The beans were also the best I've had in a while.  Nice and tangy.Mrs. Belly gots the small BBQ Sammich. And who can resist the BBQ spaghetti?   This is good stuff.  Pasta with BBQ sauce and pork- how could you miss?Stop off at Neely's next time you're in Memphis.  You'll be glad ya did.  Got a good spot in Memphis/West Memphis to tell us about?

  • Ol' Faithful

One of the very few places in Little Rock that I have found to be reliable restaurant every time out is Cafe' Prego.  The prices are reasonable, the service is attentive, the wine list is good, and the food is excellent.Shrimp Crepes with mixed veggies is an excellent light dinner choice-Myself- I can't seem to steer clear of the eggplant parmesan.   A side of pasta clinches the deal- all for about 10 bucks.  This dish is easy to botch- I've seen it done too many times, but Prego nails it every time. What's your Ol' Faithful?
