The Oxford American Music Issue

The Ninth Annual "Oxford American" Southern Music Issue is on newsstands now. As usual, if you enjoy music, you should buy it. Even if you don't like reading about music, the accompanying Southern Sampler CD is worth the $15 cover price. It's intensely curated, with 26 tracks representing just about every genre and sub-genre of Southern music.

AND: After nine years of searching for a "suitable" track,  the magazine finally acknowledged the cultural importance of rap in the South with David Banner's "Cadillac on 22s."

I haven't had a chance to read much of the issue, but Derek Jenkins, who you all know and love as "A boy named Sooie," has an impressive profile on obscure crooner Teddy Grace, and Mike Powell, who lived here a few months back, has a really nice piece on singer/songwriter Fred Neil and a short memory of his days in a band. (He's a "writer who rocked." Ha). And there are stories on and songs by Arkanas-connected folks, Lee Hayes, Iris Dement, Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks.

This is happening tonight:
