Valley of the Vapors, the diverse and stridently independent Hot Springs festival, kicks off tonight, 7 p.m., $5. Peelander Z is a Japanese "action comic punk band." A one-man band, the Show is the Rainbow, blends rock, electronic music and hip-hop. Plus, two Chicago bands, Tight Phantomz and Scouts Honor, and Mexican neo-hardcore from Lipstick Terror.

At White Water, perhaps Arkansas's best singer/songwriter, Jim Mize, opens for literate songwriter Kevin Gordon, a Nashville-based musician who plays swampy, low-key Southern rock, 10 p.m, $5.

Brian Wolff, formerly of Drums and Tuba, has a new solo project he calls Wolff and Tuba. That's pretty much what it is, Wolff and his Tuba and a lot of filters and pedals and drum machines and singing through the tuba. At Sticky Fingerz,  9:30 p.m., $5.

At Vino's, Chicago punks Tub Ring headline with San Francisco's Karate High School, who do punchy, emo-ish punk; Cincinnati's Foxy Shazam, who do Queen-style pop-punk; and Peachcakes.
