The Judge

Like any seasoned public speaker, Judge Reinhold knows that self-deprecation is an easy path to being charming. On Tuesday, before the screening of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," he told the audience about how thrilled he'd been to find out that Pauline Kael, the legendary New Yorker critic, had reviewed the film and better yet, called him an heir to Jimmy Stewart....and Daffy Duck.

That didn't seem too far off during the pre-screening Q&A (moderated expertly by the Times Derek Jenkins) as Reinhold effusively reeled off dozens of insider-ish anecdotes about the film. Like: Method even then, Sean Penn remained in the Jeff Spicoli character even off-camera. When Reinhold did coverage shots with him, where Reinhold stood off-camera while Penn shot a conversation with him, Penn had Reinhold shout his lines to help convey the effect of someone stoned and out of it. He also talked a lot about the music of the film and how hard they'd lobbied to get a Bruce Springsteen cut. In the film, his character wears a Springsteen t-shirt and the producers even cast the Boss' sister as one of the spirit girls. And more self-deprecation: He talked about the opening screening, which first debuted for an all adult audience, who rolled in the aisles during the infamous bathroom scene, and then showed for an all teen audience, who were completely silent during the scene, traumatized by the potential.

Reinhold will moderate the "Keep it Natural" panel on filmmaking in Arkansas at noon on Sunday.
