Velvet Kente

Formed: This is one of the ever-shifting performance names for local composer .joshua. It's fairly new as a name, but .joshua's been playing around locally for several years, most prolifically in '06 and '07. When he stepped away from the local scene, he didn't go into hibernation. He took his show on the road, playing places like Kansas City, Memphis and Nashville.

From: Little Rock by way of Memphis.

Members: Tim Anthony (key, bass), Steven Robinson (guitar), Jamal ____(drums), .joshua (guitar, vocals).

Album: The EP "we spun gold from hurt." (available for purchase here) and a forthcoming release, likely out this spring.

Sounds like: Afro-beat, mediative folk.

Claim to fame
: Korto Momolu tapped joshua. to provide the soundtrack to her show in Bryant Park on the finale of "Project Runway." His song "binti" looped at that show and at Korto's Harvest Fest show in Hillcrest.

Where you'll find them: So far: Downtown Music and the MLK Commission's Inaugural Ball at Clear Channel.

Music:

"binti."

"come make my life beautiful again."

"this feels holy."
