Last Night: Rock Candy 500

Posted By on Fri, Apr 10, 2009 at 11:15 AM

Gerard Matthews surveys the winners.

The stars aligned last night at the River Market Pavilion at the Rock Candy 500. Just the right number of cars for our ultra-complicated double-elimination bracket system showed up. All of the surprising amount of technology associated with the track worked. The torrential rains waited until after we were finished. No one got impaled by our awesome, but dangerous trophies (donated, generously, by Robert Roling of Custom Royale). Those who stuck around post-race got free beer.

Hats off to the winners:

Best of Show: Caleb Horne
Fastest: Brooks Bishop
Best Design: Noah Vining
Best Kids: Gabe Bertram
Best Paint: Ron Arra

We're already scheming about next year's derby. Stay tuned.

Catch a bunch of pics after the jump.

UPDATE: Corrinne Horne, wife of Best of Show winner Caleb, shared some great shots she's loaded on Flickr with us. Slideshow below.

The tale fell of my whale (it's glittery and in like the third slide) during transportation. I woke up at five this morning and couldn't get back to sleep because I couldn't stop thinking about ways I could've made a stronger tale. Haunting!

UPDATE II: Our trophy maker, Robert Roling, has some nice pics on his Myspace page, too.
