How Sweet It Is.

Over the years, when there’s been something special going on, I’ve received a white box with a little gold and green sticker. Sometimes it’s a birthday; other times, it’s been for a special occasion, like when I made the big decision to leave TV for this writing career or when my husband and I have celebrated an anniversary. Inside that box, no matter who had decided to go or who’d made the selection, there would be a heavenly cake -- something that couldn’t be found in a Sam’s Club bakery aisle.

That cake would come from Silvek’s European Bakery.

The cake would be something sublime, like a Lemon Buttercream or a Hazelnut Torte or a Dark Chocolate Mousse with Raspberries. After all this time, the Black Forest with its sweet dark cherries has to be my favorite. But I knew whatever was in the box would be great.

More on the jump.

Fortunately, I don’t necessarily have to wait for a special occasion to try out one of the cakes or cookies or breads or other specialties from the bakery. I can do what I used to do on Friday mornings when I got off work -- go by and pick up a couple of the palm-sized specialties and a gallon of milk from the Kroger that Silvek’s resides in and take it all home to share as a special treat with the hubster. There are plenty of slices of my favorite cakes in the case to the right of the register, along with delights like fudge and cannoli, European fudge and Pecan Delight, kuchen and Chocolate Stefanka. There are cheese straws and biscuits and Linzer cookies and sand tarts. And there’s bread, lots of it. Sure, it may be three or four dollars for each slice of cake or a buck for a cookie, but you get what you pay for.

Mr. Pupkowski’s little bakery that could has been a mainstay in my life while I’ve been here in Little Rock, and though sometimes I kinda balk at some of the odd combinations I’ve seen in those cake cases, I’ve always felt like there’s a sort of glamour to being able to pick up something from Silvek’s to take home or to share at those special gatherings. It’s fancy sweets, sure, but we all need a place like that, right?

You can find Silvek’s European Bakery at the Height’s Kroger (the one between Cantrell and Kavanaugh, officially at 1900 N. Polk. Call (501) 661-9699 or check out the website.
