The much esteemed cartoonist — founder of Raw, Pulitzer Prize winner for "Maus" — offers a lecture at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6 in Hendrix's Staples Auditorium. It's billed as "Comix 101.1: The Development of a Literary Comic Genre," which, to be honest, sounds like a topic that was fresh about a decade ago. Still, I'm so there.

Other dates you might want to circle: Novelist, essayist and journalist Francine Prose talks about "the power that word and image aquire when they merge with one another" in the opening lecture, 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Also in Staples. At 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, there'll be a dramatic reading of "Life During," a new play by Hendrix alums Lesley Dancer and Ashlie Atkinson about a professor living in a futuristic society where freedom of speech and academic freedom have been suspended. Atkinson, of course, has had success on stage ("Fat Pig") and screen ("Inside Man," "Rescue Me") since her time at Hendrix (and interning at the Times).

More: Poet Jorie Graham comes on Nov. 10, and film writer Girish Shambu speaks in April of next year on "Words on the Screen: Film Blogging, Cinephilia, and Internet Film Culture."

All programs are free and open to the public. See the full schedule here.
