Daily Digest: The ephemera of "Mad Men," one of our favorite writer's gets a blog and more

If you're obsessed with "Mad Men," "The Footnotes of Mad Men" will be your favorite new blog. It delves deep into the cultural ephemera of the show, with mini-investigations, for instance, into how airlines in the '60s encouraged stewardesses to flirt. There's more on that explicit octopus and woman painting, too, pervs. [Via Kottke]

Times contributor Sam Eifling has a new blog. It might make you jealous. Here's how a recent entry starts:

Some Sundays you wake up at noon, sweating like Patrick Ewing at the free-throw line, wondering things like, Why is my head full of snot? Why is it so hot in here? Is my camera really broken? Why is my shirt covered in wine stains? Has the 1997 Geo Tracker that broke down and nearly stranded me on the streets of greater Port-au-Prince at 4 a.m. had its headlights scooped out and tires pinched by hoodlums? What the hell happened last night? [SamEifling.com]

Last week, in the New York Times "Critical Shopper," reporter Cintra Wilson reviewed the new Manhattan JC Penny and caught some heat for lines like, "[Penny] has the most obese mannequins I have ever seen. They probably need special insulin-based epoxy injections just to make their limbs stay on. It’s like a headless wax museum devoted entirely to the cast of “Roseanne.”" Which is kind of hilarious if misguided. She then apologized not once, but three times on her blog. The first, since removed but preserved by New York magazine's The Cut, was also kind of hilarious if misguided: "I don't have any negative feelings at all about extra weight -- I think fat is totally sexy and gorgeous. I saw the light on this way before I interviewed Beth Ditto, even. I'm an unregenerate chubby chaser. I didn't write the piece from an inner place of look-ist elitism or anti-fat condescension."
