Though the venue was only about half-full, the Avett Brothers brought it to Robinson Center Music Hall last night. They graciously thanked their fans with a dynamic and heart-felt performance that took the crowd on a roller-coaster ride. Kick-drum and banjo begged listeners to dance a jig, then piano and cello led them back to a sway.

A new working relationship with Rick Rubin has had a number of folks skeptical about their new pop sound. But the band proved there is nothing much to get up in arms about. Opening with crowd favorites "Salina" and "Shame," followed by "I and Love and You" from the same titled forthcoming album,
the night's artfully woven set list seamlessly blended the old with the new.

Cellist Joe Kwon added another interesting dimension to their performance, strumming his cello like a guitar during "Distraction # 74" and occasionally leaving the stage to the original Avett Brothers. Look for a full review in next week's edition.
