Fill Your Pantry.

Any cook on your holiday list is going to be splendidly happy with a gift from War Eagle Mill. Question is, are you going to take the easy route out, or enjoy a day of driving through some of the prettiest land on God’s green Earth to get there?

If you decide to make the journey, go hungry. Pull right up to the front and just head up those two flights of steps to the Bean Palace, the Mill’s restaurant. It’s on the third floor. Order yourself a cornbread sandwich or better yet the Beans, Cornbread & Slaw lunch, all homemade from ingredients you can find in the Mill or in the area. Guaranteed to warm you up and get you in the mood for a walk around outside to check out the old bridge and the waterfowl, or to shop the other two floors of the Mill.

More on why you might consider War Eagle for your gift-giving needs, on the jump.

You’ll find grains and jellies and all sorts of food items on the first floor. Here’s where to pick up your flour and cornmeal, your mixes and whole grains. Samples of jellies and dips are out for you to try, and chances are you’ll go home with a little more than you planned on. That’s okay. The trip was worth it.

The second floor’s where you’ll find all sorts of kitchen implements of construction, quilts, knives, that sort of thing. There’s always something else neat or new or country to add to your collection.

Can’t make the trip? Fortunately, War Eagle Mill has paid attention to the Internet revolution. Sure, the original Mill dated back to 1832, but today’s Mill is wired in. You can get just about everything (except dessert at Bean Palace) by going to the website. Oh, and they offer free shipping for orders off $70.

I keep rolled oats, unbleached whole wheat white flour and stone ground cornmeal from the Mill in my pantry at all times. Whoops, just noticed I’m running a little low on flour… looks like another trip is in order.

WAR EAGLE MILL. All organic grains ground onsite and available to you at reasonable prices. Really good deals on packages and baskets for those on your gift list. A must-order for anyone on your mailing list who cooks. They do sugarless, too. RANGE: Most gift baskets & boxes run $18-35. ONLINE: PHONE: (479) 789-5343. STORE: On Arkansas 303 north from Highway 412 between Springdale and Huntsville. PICKUP: River Market Grocery, Gifts of Arkansas.

P.S.  War Eagle really does define the whole idea of thinking green and organic.  Learn more over at Tie Dye Travels

  • Cats and dogs

I've always been leery of people who dislike animals. To my wife and me, a house without dog hair in the corners and a cat perched on the windowsill is as barren as a highway rest stop. We're down to three dogs and two cats, the smallest menagerie we've had for years.
