Breakfast week part 7: Weekend brunch

WEEKEND EATS: Brunch at Purple Cow
  • WEEKEND EATS: Brunch at Purple Cow
The Purple Cow isn’t just a place to grab ice cream and a burger — on the weekends, the local chain also offers a very family-friendly brunch menu during the morning hours.

I’ve seen the little sandwich board on Chenal Parkway in passing many times, and decided that last weekend was a good time to take Hunter and go and see if it really is that kid-friendly. And we were pretty happy about the outcome.

Now, I have to say — a lot of the time when I take Hunter and go to a restaurant, I get the question “and how many others will be joining you?” The idea of a parent dining along with such a young child probably seems a bit weird, sure — after all, there is a school of thought that kids that age can’t appreciate the restaurant experience fully. Others believe you should bring your little hellion with you everywhere.

That… is a discussion for another list. I’ll abbreviate my response on this to say that, perhaps since she’s been brought with us to restaurants from her earliest age, she has grasped the idea of appropriate restaurant behavior for the most part. And that… is getting off the subject.

The lovely lady at the front desk didn’t raise an eyebrow at all. She just asked if we’d like a booster seat or a high chair and lead us over to the table with a cup full of crayons for Hunter to play with. She even got her own menu. Hunter happily colored away while I looked through the menu. Through a series of questions I figured out what she wanted.

“Hunter, do you want eggs?”
“Eggs!” she answered.
“Fruit?”
“Banana!”
“Bacon?”
“No… no. Banana!”
“Pancakes?”
“Oooh.” She looked up at me with that last suggestion and just grinned her fool head off. I decided on the Belgian Waffle ($4.15) and decided to add pecans (you can also add in chocolate chips or have strawberry and whipped cream toppings). For her, I ordered the Simple Scrambled Egg Kids Brunch ($2.95) — it usually comes with toast and breakfast potatoes, but you can also have two kids pancakes instead of toast — and that’s what we went for.

Along with those, I ordered up a fruit cup ($2.95) and a tea for myself. Hunter had brought her own beverage.

While we waited (and she proceeded to cover her placemat in crayon) I looked around and noticed something interesting. It didn’t surprise me to see that almost every table had a kid at it… that makes some manner of sense. Some had two or three. It was the number of tables with kids that had just one adult. I noticed two girls with a woman who I presumed was their grandmother, a father and his three-ish son, a couple with a girl who looked to be Hunter’s age, and a woman and her apparently twin girls. Perhaps that’s part of the charm of The Purple Cow — it’s a great place to connect with your kids.

Before Hunter could pause to tell me she hungry, our food had arrived. My waffle took up the entire plate, but it wasn’t one of those big deep ones you see in places where you make your own. It did have nice large holes for optional syrup filling, and it had a pretty good flavor — plus the meaty crunch of those pecans.

Hunter’s breakfast was similarly large… at least, it seemed that way to me, but since the Kids Brunch menu tackles kids of all ages I bet it’d be about normal size for the average child. She pointed and kept saying “ooh” as I cut up her pancake for her, then she went at stabbing each piece with her fork and chewing it off the end of the utensil. From time to time I’d add pieces of fruit from the fruit cup — strawberries, grapes, banana slices, pieces of melon and pineapple. She liked the banana best — it was the easiest to get on her fork. I also helped her get the eggs on her fork… she’ll eventually develop the motor coordination to make that work.

We’d arrived around eleven that morning, and right before we left at 11:45 it had really packed out, with almost every table occupied. I was kinda surprised there wasn’t more of a roar to the crowd. Maybe it’s good soundproofing. Or maybe these kids are really grasping the idea of how special it is to have this sort of brunch with someone they look up to. I hope it’s the latter, myself..

There are three Purple Cow locations in Arkansas — one on Chenal Parkway in front of the Christian Bookstore and paint place, one on Cantrell catty-corner from Pavilion in the Park, and one in Hot Springs. For more information, check out the website.

*P.S. We've now done two breakfast weeks, one this month and one back in January. I'm collecting places to visit for a third breakfast feature for July, and I need your help. I'm looking for great breakfast locations all over Arkansas. If you have one, please drop me a line here or at kat@tiedyetravels.com. Thanks!
