EGGS, OVER WELL: At Trevors Cafe in Dumas

  • EGGS, OVER WELL: At Trevor's Cafe in Dumas
This weekend was spent doing research across the southern portion of the state. On the way down, Grav Weldon and I stopped in at a little place called Trevor’s Café in Dumas.

Now, I’d been there before. Photographer Leif Hassell and Hunter and I stopped in for a bite after we’d covered Ding Dong Daze last month. At the time, the place was packed. Trevor’s offers this lunchtime buffet for $8.58 that includes fried chicken, barbecue ribs, fried catfish and more, and the place had packed out. On any other given day, we’d have been all about that. But the festival had been tremendously hot, and all I wanted to do was to sit in the air conditioning and make sure Hunter got food and cooled off.

Leif got the house burger and fries; I got a special that was marked up on a piece of cardboard by the kitchen window — a BBQ beef sandwich. Out came this big hefty bun full of the sauciest chopped BBQ I had ever encountered. I mean, seriously, one step away from being a Sloppy Joe. I had looked doubtfully at it for a moment, but once I’d had a bite I lost my reservations. It was tasty. There were plenty of tots, and it was all we could do for Hunter and I to finish the plate. They also brought her out a big cup of milk with ice in it — which solved the cooling down bit, though she more wanted to bathe in it than drink it.

But I digress.

Grav and I had left early in the morning to accomplish all the assignment work I was attempting to shove into the weekend. The turn to head out to Highway 1 was just south of Trevor’s, and I wanted to see how the breakfast was.

Trevor’s is housed in the former Dumas Ford building. There’s an auto shop in the old repair bay section of the building. In fact, you can enter Trevor’s from either the front door of the old showroom or through the repair bay entrance, no problem. There are few decorations inside on the wood-paneled walls, and when we came in we were the only seated guests. But there was a guy leaning over the counter waiting for an order.

We knew it was going to be a hot day, so we were planning to eat light. Grav had decided on the biscuits and gravy ($1.50 for one, $2.75 for two) and I scanned over things. I really didn’t want a big breakfast, and the idea of cinnamon toast sounded lovely. I asked for it with a pair of over-well eggs. Cinnamon toast, by the way, is a buck, and it’s a dollar an egg.

We noticed that a young lady with a baby had come in for a pick-up order, and then we watched the guy who had been waiting walk out with two very large bags of Styrofoam boxes. I noticed that our waitress had gone into the kitchen, and there was some talk and pointing going on. A few minutes later the waitress came back out.

“I’m really sorry,” she started to tell Grav. We both looked up at her.

“Okay?” he asked.

“That guy just walked out with every biscuit we had.”

We looked at each other. I shrugged. “You could get something else.”

“Every one?” he asked, hopefully.

“Every last one. Usually we have plenty all morning. We could make up more from scratch, but it’ll be a little while.”

“I need to look at the menu again,” he told her.

“I’m really sorry!” she replied.

“It’s not your fault,” we both said in unison. She turned and went back into the kitchen.

“I’m so sorry,” I whispered, “that he bogarted the biscuits.”

LIGHT BREAKFAST: Cinnamon toast & eggs

Our waitress returned with my eggs and cinnamon toast. That was really quick! My eggs had been separately griddle-fried and were just this lovely slightly crusty texture. They were good and exactly what I wanted.

The cinnamon toast, though — was something else. No one does cinnamon toast any more, have you noticed? It’s French toast or cinnamon rolls or something of the like. This was a nice fine evenly textured example. I’m guessing that there was a cinnamon-butter mix to get the cinnamon so evenly spread. The sugar was likely dusted on top.

I know, such a simple dish. How could anyone screw that up? You might be surprised. So many times I have encountered cinnamon toast that was a clump of cinnamon topped by a clump of sugar in the middle of an otherwise untouched piece of toasted bread… that to find it done decently well was a surprise. I enjoyed it. I really did.

Because of our schedule, Grav deferred on ordering something else. I’ll have to share what happened at Rhoda’s in Lake Village next. Poor, poor Grav.

You’ll find Trevor’s Café in the old Dumas Ford location at 120 North Highway 65. They’re open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. A good stop if you’re heading to Jackson, MS or the like. (870) 382-1110.
