Last night: Ben Kweller @ Juanita's

He may be a 29-year old father of two, but the dude's still got bomp.

Last night, Ben Kweller bounced on stage, all grins, Muppet hair and grandma cardigan, ran to the piano and plinked through "That's How It Should Be (Sha Sha)" a Kweller Klassic if there ever was one. For the next 80 minutes, the baby-faced pop savant blurred around Juanita's, running from piano to guitar on a sugar high, even jumping on the drum riser to shred out a few solos on his worn acoustic guitar, metallized through a My First Garage Band pedal.

Between all the Nilsson-esque ditties, slacker torch songs and pre-iPod indie anthems, Kweller slipped a few surprises out of his sleeve, giving shout outs to "Issac and Brad" (Alexander and Williams) of last-minute opener Big Silver, sneaking a Metallica solo into a song, tacking "Let It Be" on the end of another and giving Sammy Sosa-style ups to Garth Brooks after ripping into "Friends in Low Places" and "Rodeo."

He may not have the recognition he deserves as Gen-Y's power-pop poet laureate, but dang if he's not a showman and darn if doesn't have devotion in spades. If you like Ben Kweller, you tend to really, really like Ben Kweller and the elbow-to-elbow jam of twenty-somethings on the Juanita's floor was all the back-up singing, drink-toasting proof you'd need.

Check out last night's setlist after the jump.
